#13: May, 17- Guayasamin Museum
1) How would you characterize Guyasamin's art at both aesthetic and political levels?
I would characterize Guayasamin's art as being abstract and having a lot of emotion, and symbolism. Most of his collections included emotions of sorrow, misery, anger, and sadness. He was very in touch with the evil and wrongdoings of the world, and would express how he felt about certain political movements as well as mass shootings, and horrible events that occurred throughout history in different parts of the world. Even from a young age, he experienced death and sadness all around him. He witnessed his friend being shot as a young boy, and was exposed to poverty and corruption. He wanted to portray these things that he saw and learned about, but he also knew that the world had good things in it too. Guayasamin also created some pieces, including a collection that was dedicated to hope, love, and tenderness. His main objective from this was to portray a sense of peace, and hoped for world peace in the future.
2) Why is he such an important Ecuadorian artist? Look at the photo of Guyasamin's painting of Chilean dictator, Augosto Pinochet at the following link: https://www.travelblog.org/Photos/4001400
Guayasamin is such an important Ecuadorian artist because he created artwork that had many different emotional interpretations about past and present events and occurrences in the worlds (ongoing) history. He is also very important because he decided to dedicate his entire life's work not to his family, but to his country, where his work could stay forever.
Why do you think this was considered controversial and ultimately removed from the museum?
I think this piece may have been considered controversial because of the depicted rope that looks like a noose above the leader. The painting also shows the dictator as being harsh and like people want him dead.
