Language has shaped culture.
This is obvious with the kids at Neque.
Language and communication in general has given them the tools to
express themselves, be happy, and to just have fun. For our interactions with these kids,
language has given us a common ground.
Maybe we don’t understand their language and vice versa. A chair is still a chair in a different
language. Maybe we don’t have to speak,
but we all understand what it is to help. Yesterday we helped the little kids make
cards. They understood that we were
drawing around their hands in Spanish just as I did in English. Taking this into consideration, all our
actions were just like this, whether it was smiling, dancing, drawing, or doing
homework, we were all able to understand each other to some degree because
language has taught us what different things mean.
