I really enjoyed going to
the Guayasamin’s art museum, his art was not typical art that I would go to see
and so it was very interesting for me to see it. A lot of his paintings had to do
with war are of important figures. He goes about painting these figures in a nontraditional
way with blocky features and a variety of colors. Guayasamin’s art was very
important to Ecuador because he expresses the human pain, torture and loss that
the people of Ecuador endure. Guayasamin painted a portrait of the Chilean
dictator, Augusto Pinochet, which was eventually taken down for controversial
issues. Part of the controversial reasons could be due to the fact that he portrayed
Augusto as a monstrous figure in the painting. And since Guayasamin’s artwork is
highly recognized throughout Ecuador it looks bad that Ecuador showcases a
painting that bashes a person of political importance in Chile. Overall the museum
was a great experience.
