One of the rewards of working with the children at Ñeque y mas Ñeque was being able to connect with some of the children and making an impact on their lives. They seemed so happy. Some even just clung to me the whole time and wanted to either be on my lap or hold my hand. I felt so alive and helpful being there. I never wanted to leave. If I could, I would volunteer there every day.
Some of the challenges were communicating and gettin some to be less shy. I ended up finding various ways to explain things to them, whether it was by using some words I do know in Spanish or acting something out. With the children who were shy, I would ask them if I could sit by them or if they wanted to be my partner. One example is when a little girl wouldn't even leave the teachers side when we were playing the machine. I asked her to come with me, previously I asked to sit by her, then she ended up coming with me and just copying what I did. She seemed to be pretty happy once she got involved.
