Blog Post #15 - Homeward Bound
Well, to begin, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking
forward to seeing my family again, but I will not see them until spring term
has ended. Sooner than that, I’m looking forward to what seems like little
luxuries the U.S. has to offer, like lighter water pressure, consistently hot
showers, a greater variety of food, etc. Unfortunately, this feels very
ethnocentric to say, but I believe that it’s only natural to miss the comforts
of home and that it’s possible to miss them and still resist thinking that the
luxuries of the U.S. are superior to the lifestyle here in Ecuador. I’m also
looking forward to things like sleeping in my own bed and not having to work
around a language barrier. (Again, this is borderline ethnocentric.)
I’m going to miss a lot of things about Ecuador. I’m going
to miss how inexpensive it is to take a taxi or to buy a snack or even lunch. I’m
going to miss the friendliness of most strangers you pass on the street.
Mostly, I’m going to miss the independence and freedom being in Ecuador has
offered me. There have been so many opportunities to try new things here in
Ecuador that I would never have had back home, including trying guinea pig,
going out with friends to dance, making impromptu trips to historic places like
the Basillica, etc. I’ve been able to
come and go as I please without having to worry about the responsibilities back
home in the United States, and it’s been incredibly freeing and beneficial to
my time here in Ecuador.
