Visiting Neque y Mas Neque
had many rewards for me. I was able to see a part of Quito that I had not yet
been exposed to and therefore I was able to see how people live in this part of
Quito. For example, we passed many homes that I would assume would house one
family, but Patty pointed out that these homes often times house around 5
families. This gave me new perspective and showed me how lucky I am to be
living the life I live. Interacting with the children was a way for me to
practice my Spanish in a no pressure zone. I know that the children will most
likely not be making fun of me if I make a mistake with my Spanish. A challenge
I faced while being at Neque y Mas Neque would be not that I can’t speak Spanish
but the resisting the urge to speak English. I caught myself multiple times
saying “hello” and “what’s your name?” and then realizing that they don’t know
what I am saying. Instead of mistakenly saying hello I just wave and then once
they say hola it reminds me that I need to speak Spanish.
