Blog post 6: Ñeque y mas Ñeque
1) I think that visiting Ñeque y mas Ñeque was a great reality check. Seeing the neighborhood and knowing that many of the kids had rough family situations made me all the more thankful for all the things I am so lucky to have. The liveliness of the children was also a great reminder to not take things so seriously. Kids aren't self conscious when they are lying on the floor pretending to be popcorn, they don't worry excessively over misspeaking to the point of not communicating and despite all they have faced in their short lives they have light hearts and smiles on their faces. We could all learn a thing or two from kids.
2) I didn't have much trouble understanding the kids or responding to them in Spanish but it was difficult at times to hear them with all the noise in the room. It is difficult to understand English in a room full of kids but understanding Spanish as a secondary language was even harder. Most of the kids were very eager to play with us although some were more shy. I found that when I spoke to them in Spanish they got much more excited to play and communicate with me.
