Blog Post #8 - Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis

According to the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, language shapes culture. The difficulty in applying this hypothesis to our interactions with the children at Neque y mas Neque lies in the language barrier between us. They speak Spanish and we speak English, and because Sapir-Whorf says that language shapes culture, our cultures are distinctly different and could potentially crash. Instead, our cultures and our communication flow and complement each other. The words we share, and the way we communicate even if not in Spanish, help to create a new culture - a hybrid culture of American and Latin American values.
