Blog Post Six: Neque y Mas Neque
The biggest reward for me while working
with the kids at Neque y Mas Neque was giving me a new perspective on life and
how fortunate many of us in the U.S. are. Many of the kids there were wearing
clothes that had holes, were too small or too big, or very dirty. Something as
simple as clean, properly fitting clothes is taken for granted by many of us. I
also had a lot of fun playing with the kids. They seemed to enjoy and
appreciate the games we played which was really nice.
The obvious challenge was being
able to communicate with the kids. Many adults here in Ecuador know some English
which makes it easier to converse or get my message across, but the children at
Neque y Mas Neque didn’t know any. To overcome this challenge I had to think
really hard about all my previous Spanish lessons as well as using gestures to
communicate.
