Blog Post Twelve: Host Family and Neque

My initial perceptions of my host family have changed quite a bit depending on the person. Initially my host dad did not seem too interesting or exciting, but this may have been because he was picking us up at 1 a.m. I could understand if he wasn’t in the most cheerful mood. After spending time with him over the past two weeks though I have come to know him as a very kind person and a lot of fun as well! As for my host mom, when we first met she gave us a house tour and she was very friendly and welcoming. She has continued to be that way all through my stay. My host brother has been a lot of fun and helpful from the start, although I didn’t meet him until about a week into our time here. I also didn’t meet my host sister until a week into the trip, but my relationship with her has changed quite a bit. Initially she seemed shy and would back out of the room, but still hold conversations with her mother who was in the room, but she would be just out of my line of sight during this. After a while she seemed to warm up and now she has been super kind like the rest of her family. I am very fortunate to have been placed with this host family and I have really enjoyed getting to know all of them! I also got to meet a lot of their extended family on Mother’s Day and all of them were just as kind and friendly as my host family!

I think my most important contribution at Neque today was when I taught the kids how to play the game “hot hands.” Doing things like helping with the art projects and putting away supplies are nice, but also temporary and quickly forgotten. They really seemed to enjoy the game and I think it is something that will stick with them. Hopefully when they play it they will remember the pasty college kid that came and taught it to them.
