There were many parts of the city tour that I found to be very interesting. For me however, my favorite part of the city tour was visiting El Panecillo. This was my favorite part because we got to hear the quick story of Loma El Panecillo which was really fascinating This statue was both magnificent in size as well as architecture. I had seen this statue looming in the background of much of the scenery all day, so it was really amazing to get up close to the statue. I also loved the view of this location which allowed us to see the city of Quito, some of the landscape, and the volcano. Even though it was foggy and raining, this was such a great perspective of the city and definitely my favorite part of the city tour.
On the city tour there was so much information presented and I really learned a lot about the history of Quito as well as the modern city today. The liberation of Quito was something that I found very interesting. I also learned how Europe aided by giving money to those who were fighting for Quito's independence. It was also interesting how America helped to inspire Quito to break away from the rule they were under and become independent. I think it is really interesting how the history of Quito and especially Ecuador is so new but so rich.
There were many things that surprised me on the city tour. I think the history of Quito and how recent everything actually occurred was really surprising. I think the fact that Quito found its independence through determined individuals who wanted freedom was really inspiring. The layout of Quito was also really surprising to me. Coming from a small town, our roads are fairly simple with two lanes. In the city of Quito the roads are much more intricate. There are many one way streets, narrow streets, and round about's that make for a very specific system that one must know well in order to effectively navigate. I think because this was also our first day in Quito, much of what we saw was very surprising, but also exciting at the same time.
