Day 3
5.6.2017
Otavalo, as a whole, is
my favorite experience from today. Getting to walk through the Otavalo market
and see all of the handmade goods was amazing. The market was full of bright
colors and items that I often don't see in the United States and if I do they
are extremely expensive. Things like alpaca blankets can be bought in the
United States but are both not handmade and very expensive. After the market we
at an indigenous house and that was also an amazing experience because the food
was nothing I had ever seen or eaten before.
While eating at the indigenous
house I learned about the typical food they eat, including cuy, soup with
potatoes and vegetables and multiple types of corn. We listened to music played
by the indigenous people, a style I had heard before.
One behavior I have had sticks out to me as being
ethnocentric is my thoughts I have had on some of the homes I’ve seen in Quito.
Before coming here, I had it in my mind that the homes and buildings in Quito
would look like those in New York city but they aren’t. It has also crossed my
mind how much graffiti and garbage there is on the streets and buildings
almost, in my opinion, more than in New York city or Chicago.
