Guayasamin - Blog 13
Guayasamin’s art makes statements about many things in both art and politics. His artwork exploits and uncovers the pain, reality, and tenderness in life. He shows the struggles of poverty and the rage of war, altogether trying to show the desire for peace. His artwork displayed his hope for a better future. He also represents the native culture of Quito and the indigenous people that built the lives in Quito. It is very surreal and abstract, with a lot of deep meanings that critique government and class systems.
The painting of Pinochet depicts him as grotesque and ugly, possibly hinting to the ugly ways of the government he controls. He looks murderous and monstrous, making him an animal controlling things. This is controversial because of the way it insults Pinochet and shows him as a monster, making the painting become a dangerous thing to have.
