 1) How would you characterize Guyasamin's art at both aesthetic and political levels?

In the aesthetic level, I think his work is partly unaccepted by the mainstream. I can't use beauty to describe his paintings, but I feel shocked when I see his work. It's a unique kind of art that appeals to me, and I think that's because every painting has a profound meaning behind it, which is also very special for Guyasamin himself. For artists, the arts need to impress themselves before they infect others. In particular, he said, in painting portraits, not just looking at the surface, but seeing the inner of that person. I think painting is not just for the record that one second; It is a moment of stillness that sees through life, from birth to death.

In politics level, I think Guyasamin's contained a lot of political information. He is the first artist I knew who can combine creativity with politics. It is amazing that he is using the art way to speak of violence, suffering, and love. I felt painful when I saw his works, and I can feel that the people are suffering in his painting, which made me felt very sad. It was totally touched me. I am the person who doesn't pay a lot of attention to politics, but after watching his work, I want to know what happened to these people.

2) Why is he such an important Ecuadorian artist?

He made great contributions to the art of Ecuador. His work pays homage to the ancient people, and much of his work is about politics, and they depict people who are tortured by their lives, which makes people think about society and life. His paintings are depressive, but I could see that his paintings were full of hope -- the hope of life, the hope of love. He draws many child and mother embraces the child portraits. This represents the hope of future and the great love.
The economy and policies are a little bit unstable and are still growing in Ecuador. In the past, Ecuadorian experienced the painful of violence and policies, which echoes the struggle in his painting. However, the Ecuadorian can see the hope from his works that also represent the hope for development in Ecuador. His works record the culture.

3)
I think the painting is so naked that it makes some people from Chile feel uncomfortable. Because I can feel blood and brutality directly from the painting. Sometimes the form of art is very direct that can lead to conflict.
