My beliefs regarding appearance, food, and
social practices are potentially ethnocentric in several ways. For instance, my
first reaction to the food choices available in Ecuador seemed rather “sketchy.”
In other words, I felt that just because “they” serve Cuy, or roasted guinnea
pig in Ecuador makes Ecuadorians weird in terms of their food choices. After
hearing about the voting regulation, my initial reaction was to automatically say
“that’s absurd…no one should have to be forced to vote.” When I first saw the appearance
of traditional Ecuadorian dress, I felt that the colors were too bright…and a
little different—different. Different is the key word in these aspects; food, appearance,
and social practices. Different is okay. Different means that I am able to exigence
new customs. I anticipate the challenge of not jumping to ethnocentrism as a first
reaction. I need to be open to all new customs. I don’t have to like it, I just
need to be accepting. I feel some Latin-Americans may feel that Americans are boastful--
always in a rush—stubborn, opinionated and most certainly ethnocentric. Howard,
I am confident that I will do my best to ensure that those stereotypes and assumptions
are not present while I am abroad.
I hope to gain a deeper understanding of Ecuadorian culture. In other words, I want to expand my knowledge of Ecuadorian life, daily practices, food, and most certainly deeper understanding of the Spanish language. I am positive that this trip will improve my Spanish speaking abilities, enhance my appreciation toward the rich culture of Ecuador, and allow me to have an experience like no other I’ve experienced.
