My Expectations Blog #1
Most of my beliefs and attitudes will most like be
ethnocentric. I have never really been
to another culture. I cannot imagine
that I would not think everything is weird and strange. Especially the food will be difficult to accept
that it is normal, not weird especially because I am a very picky eater as it
is. Appearance and social practices will
be a little easier to accept and not feel ethnocentric because we constantly
see changes in trends regarding social trends.
Often the stereotypes of Latin-Americans that first come to
mind include types of food, music, and overall income level. When I think of food I always think of chips
and salsa and I usually associate Latin-Americans with mariachi music. Finally, I cannot help but think that
Latin-Americans are poor and live in very unhealthy environments.
I can only assume that Latin-Americans see us as rich and
stuck up people for the most part.
I anticipate that I will be struggling most with the food
situation. I am generally a very picky
eater so trying new things will be the largest struggle.
I hope to walk away with experiences that not many people
will have. As well, I plan to learn a
lot about Spanish and can communicate with the people there. This is especially important because I will
be doing this with people of a completely different culture. Hopefully I will be able to take all of this
away with me back to school and into my professional life.
