My family is the Saenz family. There are three members of the family: Suzana,Ann-Christina, and Teofilo. Susana is 47 years old, Ann is 18 and Teofilo(Teo for short) is 70 years old. Susana is a secretary for a lawyer. Ann is a student at the university in Ecuador, and Teo is an electrical engineer.
As far as communication goes, I have been able to communicate with my family well. Since I am able to speak Spanish, I am able to have conversations with my host family. Of course, I still have a lot to learn. I find myself constantly asking my family for specific words and how to say different sentences.
I have witnessed several examples of collectivism vs. individualism during the first several days of my trip. For instance, after school, Anna is required to help out around the house before she does her homework in order to make sure there is food on the table. At home, I rely on my parents to make sure I have food on the table. Anna donates her time for the entire family to make sue they all have something to eat. Teo works full time and supports the family. Instead of spending money on car, he works to help Anna attend school.
The main difference between my host family and my family is that I have to try extra hard to remember manners. At home, I may put my elbows on the table(unintentionally), and it doesn't seem to be a big deal. However, at my host's house, I am extra careful not to be rude. One similarity is that Suzana is a loving, caring mother just like mine. It makes me feel right at home.
Today, I was able to go to church with Suzana and Anna. What a difference in the way mass is conducted. I also felt, for the first time ever, like a minority. When we opened the doors to the church, I felt all the eyes staring at me. I could feel their glares. I finally understand what is feels like to be stared at. I also went to the park. I was shocked at how many people actually go to the park. Kids were playing soccer, riding bikes, and eating ice cream. Adults were laughing and eating food. It was an amazing experience to see how active the Ecuadorian culture is.(collectivism at heart).
