Neque y Mas Neque
Neque y Mas Neque has really changed my perspective on
the environment that children grow up in. It was so rewarding to see all of the
children smiling. These kids don’t come from a good home, or they don’t spend a
lot of time with their families. It was nice to see them all happy because you
know that you are making a difference. It was rewarding to be a role model for
the kids. In that moment, they didn’t have to be scared; rather, they could
just have fun and be kids. I couldn’t speak Spanish very well with the kids,
and had a hard time hearing their names, but we could all understand each
other. We all understood the language of play.
I thought that my biggest challenge was going to be
communicating with them, but I found that to be just the opposite. We were all
communicating through our laughs and smiles. We knew that we were both having a
good time. The biggest challenge for me was to know that these kids don’t have
a good home life. I knew that at the end of the day that those smiles might
disappear and that those laughs won’t be heard. It is really sad for me to
think about that. Overall, it was fun to be with the children and I was glad to
make a small impact in their lives.
