Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis
According to the Sapir-Whorf
Hypothesis, language shapes culture. If this is the case, then we wouldn’t
understand the culture of the children at Neque y Mas Neque. Because we both
speak different languages, this hypothesis would assume that we could not understand
each other’s culture because we don’t understand the language. I don’t find
this to be true, however. We all speak the language of play. We can communicate
through our nonverbal. Even though we may not know how to verbally talk to one
another, we still communicate with one another. It is as if we are bringing our
cultures together in a different way. We don’t have to be Spanish experts, but
rather we have to be willing to connect with the children in a different way—a way
in which they understand what we are saying.
